Bridgerton obsessed fan spends time as real life character

"As a little kid, I was obsessed with dressing up"

A DEVOTED Bridgerton fan pours her love for the period drama into being a real-life character.

Amira Mohamed’s wardrobe is packed with Regency-esque clothing – from corsets and puffed shoulders to pearls and dainty gloves.

The 20-year-old elegant style is dubbed as ‘regencycore’ and based on signature pieces, silhouettes and looks from Britain’s Regency era.

Netflix’s hit show Bridgerton has brought the era to life again and inspired Amira to channel her inner debutante.

Fashion management student Amira said: “I feel really special whenever I’m wearing something a bit different and extra.

“I love dressing up and I love how now I’ve gone back to how I was as a child.

“As a little kid, I was obsessed with dressing up.

“But as you get older you have to grow up a bit and get away from it.

“I feel like with the whole regencycore trend it’s now more normalised now for girls to wear crazy dresses out in public.”

Bridgerton obsessed fanAmira lives life like a Bridgerton character too – she goes for afternoon tea, walks in flowery gardens and frequents stately homes in London.

The Bridgerton guru has lived in Barnet, north London her whole life and knows all the right spots to feel regal.

A typical day out for Amira when she isn’t at uni is sauntering through colourful and heavily-flowered gardens

The term ‘regencycore’ comes from prince regent George IV becoming King when his father George III was deemed unfit to rule.

The real-life Regency period spanned less than a decade from 1811 to 1820.

Bridgerton obsessed fanWomen at the time wore corsets, elbow length gloves and statement puff sleeves.

Streaming giant Netflix brought the opulent style back to life in its first series of Bridgerton, which landed on Christmas Day in 2020.

The show is about a family of eight siblings of the Regency era’s powerful Bridgerton family’s attempt to find love.

The new series aired on Friday (Mar 25) after sparking a new wave of fashion.

Amira said: “I definitely get a buzz from it.

“It’s fantasy at the end of the day so I have fun with it.

“I’m definitely very inspired by Bridgerton.

“I liked how they took the regency style and made it a lot more fun and colourful, which is what I try to convey in my looks.

“My friends like Bridgerton too but I’m definitely the most into it.”

Bridgerton obsessed fanPicture-perfect Amira creates social media content with her looks as part of an online community on Instagram and TikTok.

Her accounts – which go by ‘Dreaming of Dior’ – are rife in pastel colours and elegance.

She said: “When the show blew up is when I created my TikTok account.

“Bridgerton was a huge trend at that time.

“There was a corset trend where everyone had this same corset from Amazon.

“And I posted a video in that corset that blew up, and that’s what sparked all of this in a way.”

The fashion student frequents Bridgerton-esque locations in London, including Regent’s Park, the parks in Greenwich and Pergola Gardens in Hampstead Heath.

Pergola Gardens is her favourite because she thinks it looks like Bridgerton was filmed there.

Amira said: “I feel like in London anything goes.

“I do get the odd look now and again but people tend to mind their own business.

“I did get someone taking pictures of me once without me realising.”

Amira’s style is mainly inspired by the show’s leading lady Daphne Bridgerton, who is played by English actress Phoebe Dynevor.

Clothes in the Regency era would have been made to order but Amira’s are a mix of fast fashion and things she has owned for a long time.

She plans to sit in all day Saturday and binge watch season two of the show.

Amira loves Bridgerton for its modernisation of the era and its commitment to diversity.

She said: “I love how the show is a period drama for the masses.

“I like how they’ve modernised it and they’ve made it very fantasy.

“I love the diversity in it too – I think that’s really great.

“I’m South Asian and it’s mainly white actors in period pieces, but the lead actress in the new season is South Asian.

“So, that’s really amazing for me to see.”

For Bridgerton’s sequel, Netflix teamed up with the British Fashion Council to work with upcoming designers on costumes.

According to auction site eBay, searches for ‘Bridgerton outfit’ and ‘Bridgerton wig’ have soared by 750 per cent and 214 per cent respectively.
