Learner driver passes test 2 years after learning to fly

He then passed his plane exams in July 2020 – aged just 19.

The nine tests included a 150 miles solo flight from Lydd, Kent onto Southend, Essex and then Shoreham, West Sussex and back.

He dreams of joining the Royal Air Force to fly Typhoon fighter jets.

James, of Broadstairs, Kent – whose pilot licence cost £10,000 to get – has even taken his mum Louise on a plane trip in November last year. 

He finally got rid of his car L-plates last Thursday (Feb 24) but despite being a top flyer he still picked up three faults on the roads.

James said: “I passed my driving test first time with only three faults.

“It was rather amusing letting the examiner know that I have a pilots licence whilst on the driving test.

“I suppose most people would learn to drive and then think about learning to fly.

“But it’s always been my ambition to join the RAF and fly Typhoons, so it was planes first for me.”

“At least I won’t have to scrounge a lift from my dad or my girlfriend now.”

James then caught trains with dad Paul to Warminster, Wilts on Saturday (Feb 26) to pick up his new car before driving it on the three-hour, 175mile journey home.
