KitKat slammed for new packaging that can’t be recycled

"It seems like a massive move in the wrong direction."

KITKAT’s makers have been slammed for introducing new packaging – that CAN’T be recycled.

The two finger chocolate bars used to be wrapped in foil and then paper.

Both of these could easily be recycled.

But the kids’ school lunchbox favourite has been changed to PLASTIC.

They have a logo on the back saying ‘Don’t recycle.’

Nestle admitted the new packaging “isn’t good enough” and KitKat said it is “working hard” to rectify the situation.

Customer Edward Plum fumed at makers Nestle saying: “What’s with the plastic packaging on KitKats that says ‘don’t recycle?

“We know our current solution isn't good enough“What was wrong with the fully recyclable foil & paper they used to come in?

“It was also far more satisfying to open.”

Another loyal KitKat fan Tori Holloway said: “What’s going on KitKat?

“You change the traditional packaging and replace it with something I can’t recycle.”

Claire Morgan echoed this and added: “KitKat what have you done to your packaging?

“Just bought a 21 multipack, which turns out is three individual packs of seven.

“So 25 bits of non-recyclable plastic.

“I feel like this is a step backwards.”

Another mum added: “It doesn’t seem right that at a time when big companies are moving forward and changing to green packaging.

“It seems like a massive move in the wrong direction.”

A Nestlé spokesperson said: “To ensure the freshness and longevity of our beloved KitKat’s, our packaging has temporarily changed.

“We know our current solution isn’t good enough, so we’re exploring alternatives and working hard to meet our 2025 sustainability goals.”

The spokesperson added: “We wrap some two-finger products in the same plant we use for our four-finger bars.

“This ensures we have the capacity we need.

“Right now, these wrappers cannot be recycled but we know this isn’t good enough and in line with our goal to make all our packaging recyclable or reusable.

“We are working hard to change it.”

A KitKat spokesperson said: “Making our KitKat packaging recyclable is a priority for Nestlé, and we are working hard on this.”
