The Who’s Roger Dultry is selling iconic van The Magic Bus

"a true piece of modern pop culture fully endorsed by the band to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust"

LEGENDARY rocker Roger Daltrey is flogging The Who’s iconic motor The Magic Bus.

The band’s lead singer has also put his VW Beetle up for auction – with money raised going to the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The 1965 Volkswagen Type 2 Panel Van, emblazoned with a giant Union Jack, and The Who’s logo, is expected to fetch up to £80,000.

The ultra-cool camper featured in a 2007 performance by the band in Hanover, Germany, as they belted out their 1968 hit Magic Bus.

Silverstone Auctions, who are flogging the camper, said: “Here is a unique opportunity to purchase The Who Magic Bus – a true piece of modern pop culture fully endorsed by the band to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

“Instantly recognisable, this is a unique vehicle that makes Ferraris and their ilk seem commonplace.

“It also turns heads like no other, continually eliciting waves and the ‘thumbs up’ from fascinated passers-by.

“Few, if any, vehicles will prove more fun to drive.”

Wholigans can sit on the 60s leatherette seats, embroidered with the band’s iconic target logo.

It was painted by graphic artist Richard Evans, who has worked with the Pinball Wizard band for over 40 years on their album covers and tour designs.

The sun visors are autographed by frontman Roger Daltrey, 78, and lead guitarist Pete Townshend, 77, with Richard Evens’ hidden on the interior side panel.

The VW is fully road legal with its ride height and engine unaltered.

It was exported to the USA in 1965 and includes a rock and roll rear seat, which folds down into a full width bed.

The motor also boasts four Ministry of Sound speakers and a JVC CD stereo system.

The 1965 Type 2 van was purchased in California and brought back to its birthplace in Hanover to be fully restored by VW specialists in their famous “Old Timer” workshop.

It was originally raffled in 2012 for Teenage Cancer Trust when it raised £30,000 through 9,000 entries.

The iconic van was won by builder Tony Jones who spent just £10 on a ticket.

Tony, from Irlam, near Manchester, took the camper on trips to North Wales and was thrilled with his result.

It has been with its current owner since 2012 and has been used for further fundraising for Children’s Cancer Trust.
